How Many Championships Do the Celtics Have?

On Monday night, the Boston Celtics won their 18th NBA Championship since 2001 – ending a 16-year title drought led by Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown who led their team to an emphatic 4-1 series win against Luka Doncic’s Dallas Mavericks.

The Celtics have seen many NBA greats wear their uniform, such as Bill Russell – who won 11 championships during his time there – Bob Cousy, Sam Jones, John Havlicek, and Paul Pierce among others.

Bill Russell

With 17 NBA championships to their credit, Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers share equal wins in league history. Bill Russell was at the core of Boston’s dynasty – winning 11 championships over 13 seasons as its driving force and an advocate off-court to promote social justice through activism.

Russell led the Boston Celtics to their inaugural championship during 1956-57 with an epic double overtime Game 7 win against Bob Pettit’s St Louis Hawks, then went on to defeat Minneapolis Lakers 3-0 in 1959 NBA Finals to begin an unprecedented streak of eight consecutive titles.

Sam Jones

Sam Jones won 10 championships during his 12-year run with the Boston Celtics, becoming a Hall-of-Famer shooting guard who played under legendary John McClendon at North Carolina Central (formerly North Carolina College for Negroes).

Red Auerbach selected 6-foot-4 Jones as the eighth overall draft pick in 1957, and quickly made him an integral member of Red’s Celtics dynasty. Jones excelled with an unconventional but effective bank shot.

Jones holds the second-highest winning percentage for NBA championships all time behind teammate Bill Russell. From 1959-1966 he captured eight consecutive championships before also winning two in 1968 and 1969.

Bob Cousy

The Celtics won their 18th NBA championship, breaking a tie with Los Angeles Lakers for most in league history. Bill Russell, Tommy Heinsohn, K. C. Jones and Satch Sanders celebrated with this accomplishment; it would mark their final championship triumph together as teammates.

Cousy was the engine of his team, an unparalleled point guard who could survey an entire court at full speed and instantly find an open man. His no-look passes, spinning dishes and behind-the-back feeds predated Earvin “Magic” Johnson by three decades.

Watching Payton Pritchard of City College New York sink half-court shots just ahead of the buzzer was equally enjoyable for this hermit, who has resided in his Worcester home since acquiring it back in 1960s.

John Havlicek

John Havlicek was an integral member of the Celtics dynasty during the 1960s, being named an All-NBA first team selection four times and an All-Star 13 times. His ability to score, rebound, and defend made him a versatile player who could do everything needed of him on any given night.

As a college player for Ohio State’s Buckeyes, he won an NCAA title. Later drafted by Boston, he became their starting center.

Physical intensity was something Bill Russell, Bob Cousy, Sam Jones, Jim Loscutoff, and Frank Ramsey were still contributing. His hard work and consistent play made him an essential member of a Celtics team which won titles in 1974 and 1975.

Paul Pierce

Paul Pierce spent 19 seasons in the NBA, all with the Boston Celtics. Over his 19-year tenure he won eight championships; furthermore, Pierce is well known off-court as a supporter of youth programs both in Boston and Los Angeles.

Pierce led his Celtics to victory in the 2008 NBA Finals against Kobe Bryant and Los Angeles Lakers, earning himself MVP status for this series victory. Pierce was honored as Finals MVP.

On January 23, Pierce made history for the Celtics when he recorded 47 points, 15 rebounds, five assists and three steals – breaking their record for most games with at least 45 points, 15 rebounds, five assists and three steals in a single contest.

Kevin Garnett

Garnett enjoyed an extraordinary turnaround after an initially difficult start with the Celtics. He became their face and one of the league’s premier players.

Garnett will always be remembered for delivering an iconic line upon winning his first NBA championship with Boston, and that phrase encapsulated their 2008 championship run perfectly.

With their victory, the Celtics earned 18 championships – breaking an NBA franchise tie with Los Angeles Lakers for most championship wins ever won by an organization. Additionally, this was Havlicek’s final championship and only title won under Garnett and Allen leadership as teammates on an opposing team.

Jayson Tatum

Boston hasn’t seen a championship banner hoisted at the TD Garden since 2008 when Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen led their team to glory.

Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics appear on the cusp of ending an extended title drought this year. Tatum has played an instrumental part in their playoff run and could make his debut NBA Finals appearance this June; his performance has made him an essential asset in their quest for an unprecedented 18th championship title.
